Taking a Stand for Christ

In the small town of Fort Oglethrope, Georgia, the high school cheerleaders had a tradition of putting scriptures on the banners that the football team would run through at the beginning of games.

But one person complained, and school officials were afraid of a big lawsuit (which is a pretty rational fear these days), so they outlawed the practice.

In response, the entire community showed up at the next game to show their support for the scripture banners. They carried all sorts of scripture signs, including phrases like and “Jesus is Lord” and “You took Him off our sign but you will never take Him out of our hearts.”

It’s encouraging to see believers of all ages take a stand for what they believe in. But my encouragement to those that take part in public rallies in Jesus’ name do so carefully.

No matter what we put on our signs or publicize as our political agenda, our first and most important witness is our lives.

There’s no easier way to turn people away from God then to put Jesus on your T-shirt, only to deny Jesus with an angry word or haughty heart. When you make such a big point of being a Christian, be extra careful to live like a believer (Luke 10:27).

Always be ready to take a stand for Christ! And remember, a simple lifestyle of love and forgiveness can start conversations and open doors that lead many to Him!
